GPs under the new reforms: in it for the cash?

Channel 4 has an insightful video about the rules (or rather lack of) that would allow GPs and business people to make a lot of money through commissioning healthcare.

Picture this. Your local GP also has shares in a private clinic offering hip operations. You go to your GP because your arthritis is getting out of control. Your GP, whom you trust, decides that you need a hip operation. The GP commissions (orders) your operation with our tax money, and pays the private clinic to do it for you. The money then goes into boosting the value of your GPs investment.

How do you know you’re getting the best operation?

Well, you would trust your GP to know that nowadays – it’s mostly through your local NHS hospital. Under the Tory reforms, you’ll be left wondering whether that operation was done out of care for yourself, or out of the care for the GPs back-pocket.
